History

Shyama Sastri (1762–1827)

Way back to the golden timeShyama Sastri (1762–1827) was one of the famous Trinity of Carnatic Music, along with Tyagaraja and Muthuswami Dikshitar. Born in Tiruvarur, Tamil Nadu, he was a great composer, singer, and scholar of Sanskrit and Telugu. Shyama Sastri composed mainly in praise of Goddess Kamakshi of Kanchipuram and was known for his deep devotion and mastery of rhythm (laya).

Though he wrote fewer compositions compared to Tyagaraja and Dikshitar, his works—like Sankari Sankuru, Devi Brova Samayamidira, and Himadri Suthe—are admired for their emotional depth, intricate rhythmic patterns, and classical beauty.

Thyagaraja (1767–1847)

Thyagaraja (1767–1847) was one of the greatest composers of Carnatic music and a member of the Trinity of Carnatic Music, along with Shyama Sastri and Muthuswami Dikshitar. Born in Tiruvarur, Tamil Nadu, he was a devoted follower of Lord Rama, and most of his compositions express his deep devotion (bhakti) and spiritual ideals.

He composed thousands of kritis (songs), mainly in Telugu, including famous ones like Endaro Mahanubhavulu, Nagumomu, and Bantureeti Kolu. His works are celebrated for their melodic beauty, lyrical richness, and philosophical depth, making him a central figure in South Indian classical music.

Muthuswami Dikshitar (1775–1835)

Muthuswami Dikshitar (1775–1835) was one of the Trinity of Carnatic Music, along with Thyagaraja and Shyama Sastri. Born in Tiruvarur, Tamil Nadu, he was a scholar, composer, and veena player known for his deep knowledge of Sanskrit and Hindu philosophy.

His compositions, mostly in Sanskrit, are rich in devotion and musical sophistication. Dikshitar’s songs often praise various Hindu deities and are noted for their majestic style and use of raga lakshanas (characteristics of ragas). Some of his famous compositions include Vatapi Ganapatim, Meenakshi Me Mudam Dehi, and Sri Subrahmanyaya Namaste.
